Thoughts from the big chair...

Spring is here and Apples are blossoming! Members of the RIAG helped open the "Apple Store Within a Store" at the CompUSA store in Warwick. With the theme that "Apple is Back" we noticed a large increase in traffic at the Apple section of the store. The sales reps were quite impressed and made comments that twice the amount of people were coming to see the new G3 Power Macs. We saw whole systems being sold, printers, scanners and a lot of software going out the door. Our own Mark Rafferty personally sold 2 complete systems! The management was very impressed and said that we were welcome to come back anytime and they also want to send their employees to our "Beginning Mac" class. Apple reps were there on the Sunday and demonstrated the new G3's and answered a whole lot of questions. The response was so great that it was hard to move down some of the isles, and it was proof that Apple was indeed back.

At the Apple Store event we handed out a lot of newsletters and cards. Several new members showed up at the main meeting and were happy to see some support. They also appreciated the ClarisWorks 5 demonstration - as we all did. We welcome all the new members who joined as a result of the new Apple Store.

The April RIAG agenda is in place, and our main meeting topic is going to be on graphics and icon building. We will also be giving a class about data bases and File Maker Pro on April 25 and May 2. File Maker Pro is the new name for the former Claris as this Apple spin off is concentrating on it's premier data base system. Other Claris products will revert back to Apple Corp. Does this mean that MicroSoft's Office will be the default while ClarisWorks disappears? Stay tuned and keep reading your Mac magazines.

We're officially adding a new SIG to our calender - the Apple IIGS SIG will be at Kathy Turcott's home on the 3rd Saturday of the month, starting with April 18th at 1 pm. So to all you GS users -- here's your chance to see some "power GS's" in action. If you know anyone who has a GS but doesn't belong to the RIAG please let them know about this SIG and that there is still support for these veteran systems.

Well, that's about it for now, hope to see you at some meeting this month. And remember, if you know someone who can benefit from our support don't be afraid to bring them along.

John Gentile
